UFF As A Fund Advisor

UFF - As A Fund Manager

The fund acquires an existing or greenfield farm and selects and recommends a skilled operator to manage the farm and improve productivity while leasing it back to the appointed operator. At the end of the mandated fund term, the farm is sold, either rolling into a new fund, or to the current operator, or to a third party. Capital gain on land and lease income enters the fund’s cash flow, profits from the farm under fund ownership are also fed into the fund. Our investments improve the farm and that is the capital gain.

Responsible Investment

UFF - Responsible Investment

Good environmental and social governance is an integral part of UFF’s investment process. While the fund owns the farm they not only improve production but also address the social and environmental aspects ensuring a sustainable operation that results in lasting and positive change. Environment Social Governance (ESG) is assessed and monitored on all farms, according to the Worldbank’s International Finance Cooperation (IFC) Standards.

Africa As An Investment Destination

Food security is becoming a growing, global concern. Currently there are over 7 billion people on earth, this number is on the rise and is expected to reach 9 billion people by the year 2050. Food production will need to increase at the same rate to meet the demand. Land will be at a premium and food prices will rise markedly. The African continent provides an attractive solution to this inevitability.

The cost of land in Africa is significantly lower than other continents and there is an abundance of fertile soil with a wide range of climates for agricultural diversity. Africa can act as a breadbasket for the rest of the world and bio-fuel opportunities are also promising. Africa is not only the 2nd largest continent; it also has the fastest growing economy and is positioned to become a global player when it comes to investment. Investment in Africa goes hand in hand with social upliftment and creating opportunities for the people of the continent. A key component of UFF’s investment process is ESG. UFF implements a solid health care system and skills transfer program for farm employees on all farms.

Responsible Investment

Social Responsibility is a key component in UFF’s investment process; reducing poverty through worker and community development, rural development and economic empowerment. At UFF we are not “box ticking” to comply with social responsibility. UFF incorporates social and environmental considerations in its decision-making at all levels; our social responsibility is integrated throughout our organization. UFF ensures to meet the expectations of stakeholders, is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behavior. We are committed to sustainable development and continuous improvement of labour conditions on farms and pack houses; this is an integral part of our approach to risk management. UFF implements, supports and monitor various best practice ESG standards and guidelines for farming; promoting environmental sustainability, respecting labour and human rights, respecting land and resource rights and high ethical standards.
